Dwell in Possibility
May. 7th, 2005 10:36 amWhich are you more afraid of: Being too gullible and believing things that aren't true, or being too skeptical and missing out on something important?
Afraid? I fear that she won't make it to her birthday next month. I fear that if I cease to use care the Enemy will strike her down. I fear that they will love each other so absolutely that neither of them will need me. I fear being alone for another millenia, surrounded only by my beautiful but cold subjects.
I do not fear this gullibility or skepticism you speak of. Skepticism is for frightened fools who do not believe in or see the possibilities the world has to offer. It is fear that makes them skeptical. The skeptical embrace their skepticism like a holy mantle and "gullible" is a word the skeptical use to strike at those who dwell in possibility. It is only the skeptical who fear to be branded "gullible."
The ones they call gullible are the ones that live in the possibility of the world. And when you dwell there, you do not fear to be "too skeptical" because you see the world laid out before you and there is no time for thoughts of skepticism. Instead, you pity those who would close themselves off to it.
I fear things. I listed them above. I doubt things. I doubt myself and my ability to be what my beloved and my Lady need, to not let them down, to not bring them to destruction. But that has nothing to do with this question of worldview, at least not as you have phrased it. You speak of things that are or are not true. You speak of possibility. I dwell in that realm.
If that makes me "gullible" in the eyes of the skeptics, what do I care? Those who dwell with me see the world as it can be, and as it is, an overlapping duality of existence. They see the possibility that exists in the fabric of this world. Perhaps they fear the possibility and the unknown, but worries or fear about skepticism would never cross the minds of those who see the world thus.
There is too much possibility to believe in to fear believing. In my darker moments I fear, and I doubt that the world I wish to have will ever come to be. But I go forward, choosing to believe that it is possible, through the fear, through the doubt. Only those who will not step into belief are hindered by fear of these extremes they have created in their minds.
